Kiss of Death
The BCS, as we know it, came to an end a few weeks ago. Like everybody else, I’m pumped to see a 4 team tournament. I think the right number is still 8 teams, but we’re making progress. At some point, we need to discuss the issue of these other bowl games. You know… the GoDaddy.com bowl, the famous Idaho Potato Bowl, the Little Caesar’s Pizza Bowl… Oh boy… I could go on & on for days. I have 2 words for these bowls. Who cares?
Unless you’ve got money on the game or you’re a school wanting that golden bowl money or maybe if you’re an alum of the school (and sometimes it’s debatable if they care). If it were up to me, I’d eliminate these games altogether but that’s not gonna happen, so here’s a solution.
Let’s try to at least get rivalries. Drop the affiliations. Who cares about the 6th team in the SEC playing the 2nd team in the Big 12… or whatever? How bout a Notre Dame-Miami game or Nebraska-Oklahoma? We can re-introduce old rivals or at least have a re-match from earlier in the year. Why not? Does anybody care who takes home the National University Holiday Bowl Championship trophy?
Players don’t, coaches are working on recruiting or interviewing for their next job & football fans are bored by at all.
But…. would say, an Aggie-Longhorn Cotton Bowl up the ante? Ohhhh… yes it would. Now that would be appointment viewing!
