Back in ’06, in what was the best draft in team history, the Houston Texans picked up Owen Daniels in the 4th round. It was Kubiak’s 1st draft & Casserly’s last. Mario Williams, Eric Winston & Demeco Ryans were drafted in the 1st 3 rounds. Three of those 4, including Daniels, played in a Pro Bowl in their Texans career. O.D. was the last one left from that draft & he turned out to be the ultimate steal. Off the field, Daniels has been a class act. He was as solid as they come.
On the field, you could count his dropped passes on one hand & his circus catches need more than your fingers & toes. When we needed a big catch, Owen Daniels got open, caught the ball & picked up the 1st down. He made bad passes into extraordinary catches. His enthusiasm was infectious. His injuries were frustrating but he found a way to come back again & again. Nobody ever questioned his heart.
He genuinely loves Houston & gave back to this community. He has been an ambassador for this city like no Houston athlete ever. He’s a stand-up guy & never shied away from the media or the tough questions. Plus, when it’s all said & done, Owen Daniels was the best tight end a Houston NFL franchise has ever seen. Thank you, O.D! This is one fan who will really miss #81.
