HST Podcast Final Take: March 4th
Houston area high school football lost a giant this past week when North Shore Coach David Aymond retired after 20 years at the program. Aymond is moving onto Galena Park ISD Athletic Director. Before Aymond arrived at North Shore, they hadn’t made the playoffs in 31 years.
Since then, the Mustangs made the playoffs every single year. More than 180 Mustangs signed college scholarships. Four players started the 2013 NFL season on active rosters. He had 8 straight undefeated regular seasons between ’01 & ’08 & his success precipitated the building of Galena Park ISD Stadium, one of the best high school football stadiums in the nation.
I had the chance to cover coach Aymond over the years and, although he was about as quotable as Bill Belicheck, he was great to work with & always a gentleman.
One of the most memorable moments in my career was North Shore’s ’03 state championship at Rice Stadium. I’ll never forget the celebration on the field. Mustang QB Bobby Reid turned 18 that day. In the midst of the celebration, North Shore players & fans started an impromptu chorus of Happy Birthday for Bobby Reid. It was as joyous & as perfect a moment in sports as you’ll ever witness. It was the perfect pinnacle of Coach David Aymond’s magnificent career.
